El-Sayed’s AI Under Democracy plan would put frontier AI under public-benefit governance, public ownership stakes, and hard safety guardrails.

We need real AI regulation to create guardrails and protect the ability for young people to have a job.

WHAT HE HAS SAID

• Would push to require the biggest AI labs to answer to the public, with a charter that puts public or elected representatives in control of the board.
• Would press for Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta to give up their controlling stakes in the frontier AI labs.
• Would work toward a public ownership stake in the largest AI companies, an annual dividend from the returns, and a tax on automation funding education, wage insurance, and small-business loans.
• Would push for an independent agency to test AI for safety before it ships, the way the FDA tests drugs, with incident reporting and limits on who can buy massive computing power.
• Would work to ban AI from denying medical care, making hiring or firing decisions, conducting warrantless surveillance, or replacing human oversight in life-or-death decisions.
• Supports banning deceptive AI-generated political media, requiring disclosure of AI-generated political ads, and a federal task force on algorithmic disinformation.
